As the 3D printing market expands at a torrid pace, new services have begun to pop up almost daily. There are two main camps within the 3D design service arena in the current market. The first camp is made up of the services which actually print out the designs for you, and then ship them to your front door. These would be Shapeways, i.materialise, and Sculpteo for instance. On the other hand, you have the services which offer just the files for download. Thingiverse is the leader in this area, however, several new companies have been popping up offering a variety of additional features and services to users, than just simply the 3D models.
One of these new companies, is New York City based, Kwambio. Founded by a man named Volodymyr Usov, Kwambio is unique to the market in several ways. To start, don’t expect to simply logon and begin downloading all of your models for free. Kwambio is more than just downloading models. It’s an entire platform filled with models which are guaranteed to work on your specific 3D printer every time.
Scheduled to launch in beta in October, for the first few months the platform will be free to use. After this initial trial period, there will be a small charge for each model that’s downloaded. You may be thinking, “there are so many free models out there, why would I pay for one?”
Kwambio offers several advantages over other free platforms out there. First of all, they will only offer the highest quality models on the market. The designers come to Kwambio because they don’t want to give away or sell their models without protection from piracy. Kwambio can offer this assurance to designers by promising to never distribute the source files for download, and instead streaming the files directly to customers’ 3D printers. Each product will be carefully verified and tested by the Kwambio team prior to entering the marketplace.
Before any streaming takes place, however, the company allows users to manipulated the purchased design within their platform. Do you want to add text or change the shape of the design? This is all easily done within the user’s browser window before printing. In fact, Kwambio’s motto is, ‘No two persons are similar…. and so should be their products.’ For those who own a 3D printer, but have absolutely no design skills or experience working with CAD software, this is a fun and easy way to help design and customize a product prior to printing it out.
Once a user decides to print an item, they can do so with the confidence that it will in fact print out to their liking. If for some reason, the object does not turn out how it was supposed to, the company will either offer to stream the file back to your printer, or simply refund your money.
Kwambio will be offering products within five main categories, which include design, fashion, gadgets, decor and art.
