Based in Tel Aviv, Modix is a manufacturer of large format 3D printers such as the Modix Big 60, currently available in its second version. The Big 60 is an impressively sizable 3D printer, but it looks small next to the company’s most recent release, the Modix Extra Large 120X. The release comes after Modix’s first successful year transitioning from a manufacturer of local desktop 3D printers to a global manufacturer of large format 3D printers. The printers are designed to create heavy duty, high quality components for high volume prototyping and fabrication by startups, design teams, and large R&D labs.
The self-assembly Modix Extra Large 120X boasts a build volume of 120 x 60 x 60 cm. If features E3D print heads, Hiwin motion rails, an Alcoa Mic6 print bed, and Modix’s new 100-point automatic bed leveling system. Despite its size, the 3D printer is easy to assemble according to Modix, and the company provides detailed online manuals and step-by-step video instructions, as well as free technical support.
“The Extra Large 120X advances our strategy of building large, high quality modular 3D printers,” said Modix Founder and CEO Shachar Gafni. “The success of our first large model helped us grow to become a global company, and we’re now honored to serve users around the world from small startups and workshops to the R&D departments of Philips, Applied Materials, and General Electric. This latest release confirms Modix’s dedication to building affordable, innovative, and heavy duty 3D printing solutions for designers, artists and engineers.”

The Modix Extra Large 120X can be pre-ordered for $6,000, or as a modular upgrade to the Modix Big 60 for $2,500. The Big 60, which features a build area of 60 x 60 x 60 cm, has undergone seven iterations and garnered feedback from more than 200 customers in 40 countries. Version 2 of the machine has improvements to manufacturing and assembly ergonomics along with the same high quality components that are also incorporated in the Extra Large 120X. The Big 60 starts at $3,500 and is available in either single or dual extruder form.
Large format 3D printers are becoming much more common than they used to be, but it isn’t often that you see such a massive 3D printer come in a self-assembly kit form. Modix emphasizes that it makes a point to not sacrifice quality for size, and the company’s 3D printers have so far been well-reviewed. They’re also relatively inexpensive for their size, partially because of the fact that they require self-assembly.
Modix will be showcasing the new Extra Large 120X next week at the TCT Show, which is taking place in Birmingham, England from September 25th to 27th. If you’ll be at the show, stop by and visit Modix at Booth #E21 and check out the company’s large-scale offerings.
